This year, the Lakers clinched their 60th All-Star appearance—the most in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The LA team is set to host three All-Star Games in Los Angeles, which will be it’s 9th, 10th, and 11th festivities. The Los Angeles Lakers have been a staple in the NBA since 1960 and have won eight NBA championships, but they’ve snagged 60 All-Star appearances in that span. However, they’re almost halfway there with only 39 All-Star appearances, and only the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics have more. That hasn’t always been the case though, as the Lakers have missed the All-Star game in the past, but the Lakers are about to join the exclusive 60-appearance club in 2023-22, when they’re set to enter the All-Star game for the 60th time.
The NBA is now a fascinating environment, with two clubs absorbing the majority of the league’s All-Star talent. The Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets are two superteams with outstanding players on their squads, but the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks and NBA Finalists Phoenix Suns are also in the mix. Pat Riley put together the 2006-2007 Miami Heat after Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal led the club to an NBA championship the previous year. The Heat bolstered their shooting guard depth the following season by acquiring 3-time All-Star Eddie Jones in the middle of the season. Jones only averaged 9.5 points per game with the Heat, but despite being swept in the first round of the playoffs, this squad was loaded with talent.

As an older veteran, Allen had the most All-Star appearances on the team at the time, and he did make one of the most memorable jumpers in NBA Finals history against the Spurs. This Heat squad was all-time great with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.

The 2004 Lakers should have won the NBA championship, but chemistry problems cost them the series against the Detroit Pistons in the Finals. If the Lakers had won, NBA history would have been changed since Kobe would have had at least six titles. However, O’Neal and Bryant couldn’t get along, and even the acquisitions of future Hall of Famers Karl Malone and Gary Payton couldn’t fix the team’s chemistry issues.

The Spurs, on the other hand, were on a tear and would not be denied their vengeance, defeating the Heat in five games, with Kawhi Leonard earning Finals MVP.

At moments, Kevin Durant seemed to be the greatest player on the world, while James Harden was even considered for the MVP award. In just their first season together, the club ended with the second-best record in the East, led by All-Star Kyrie Irving and veterans LaMarcus Aldridge, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan.

Because Havlicek was not the same player at 37 years old, it goes to illustrate how age, chemistry, and attrition may influence a team’s performance.

Despite a lackluster 39-27 record, the squad advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals. Despite their aging players, they were good enough to force the eventual champion Miami Heat into a seventh game.
