NEW YORK — BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills’ highest-drafted player isn’t newly extended quarterback Josh Allen, but former Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who joined with Buffalo this summer following four seasons in Chicago.
Despite being drafted second overall in 2017, the Bears rejected Trubisky’s fifth-year option, and the North Carolina graduate claimed he didn’t have “as many choices as you think” in free agency. But when Buffalo expressed interest, he viewed it as a solid backup option.
“At first, I wanted to move somewhere where I could fight for a starting position, but the ideal circumstance didn’t present itself, and the chance didn’t present itself,” he said. “I searched for the next best thing, where I could continue to grow and develop as a player and a person, and I stumbled into this organization, which I’ve loved ever since I arrived in Buffalo.”
“It’s simply wonderful to be a part of a great team and to work someplace where people care about how you’re developing as a person and as a player. It’s been an unusual journey, but I believe I’m exactly where I’m meant to be right now, and I’m loving it.”

Trubisky had a great second season with the Bears, throwing for 3,223 yards and 24 touchdowns while leading his club to 11 victories and the NFC North title. However, he was unable to capitalize on that success in the next two seasons, and was eventually supplanted in the starting lineup by Nick Foles at the start of last season before returning to the position later in the season.
Trubisky’s 50 career starts were cited by Bills general manager Brandon Beane as an advantage of having him in the quarterbacks room, and despite going 29-21 in those starts, Trubisky claimed he doesn’t believe he was treated unfairly in Chicago. Given his success during the past two seasons with the club, he also said that his exit from Chicago was not unexpected.
“I had a feeling it was coming because of the manner I was going. Year 2 was fantastic, but Years 3 and 4 were less so “According to Trubisky. “I was struggling with various ailments and other issues at the time, but as I have said, it was sad but not unexpected. Throughout the process, you can see that they were gradually losing faith in me, and that’s exactly how it happened.”
Beane stated shortly after signing Trubisky that he and his staff didn’t expect the 26-year-old to stay in Buffalo for more than a season while he rebuilds his reputation as a starting quarterback, but Trubisky has already made an impact on his teammates in his brief time in western New York.
Stefon Diggs, a wide receiver, said he can “clearly sense” Trubisky’s presence on the practice field, and Allen claimed the two have become close in recent months.
“Mitch has done a fantastic job. Allen described him as “soon becoming into one of my close pals.” “Every day, he comes in with a positive attitude, he’s working hard, and he’s not scared to ask questions about the offense.” He’s here to assist this squad in every way possible in order to help them win. I’ll tell you, we’re fortunate to have him.
“He’s got another year of experience under his belt and has been in over 50 games. So he’s got a lot of experience, a lot of information, and a lot of ideas that he’s been spouting in meetings. We’re fortunate to have him, and he’ll continue to provide excellent service to us.”
Coach Sean McDermott said the club is still deciding which starters will play in Friday’s preseason opener against the Detroit Lions; Allen is expected to sit while starting left tackle Dion Dawkins works his way back from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Friday is Trubisky’s first step in re-establishing himself as a starter, and it comes against a familiar foe: the Lions. During his four seasons in Chicago, he was 5-3 versus them.
The Bills, on the other hand, go to Soldier Field to face the Bears next week, and although Trubisky insists he is focused on the Lions, he acknowledges it will be odd to face his former club.
He said, “It’ll be strange going back there.” “However, I’m looking forward to returning there.”
