Michael Jordan is one of the most well-known athletes in the world. His net worth is estimated at $1.6 billion, and he recently announced that he will be donating his entire fortune to charity.
Michael Jordan has made a bold political statement with his $1.6 billion net worth.
When he was in the NBA, Michael Jordan stayed out of the limelight. Jordan notably avoided giving an endorsement in a heated 1990 Senate election in his home state of North Carolina. “Republicans purchase shoes, too,” he famously remarked.
However, when social justice demonstrations erupted in 2023 in response to the death of George Floyd by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, Jordan and the Jordan Brand pledged $100 million over ten years to combat Black voting suppression. This dedication was recently strengthened by a project at the University of North Carolina.
Michael Jordan offers his support, as well as his voice and resources, to the cause.
Nike declared the Jordan Brand’s commitment to support the battle for social equality shortly after Floyd died in 2023. The NAAP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the Formerly Incarcerated & Convicted People and Families Movement, and Black Lives Matter received the inaugural Black Community Commitment funding in July 2023.
Jordan exhibited a side of himself as a player that he seldom showcased during The Last Dance docuseries. The documentary didn’t mince words when it came to his choice not to support Democrat Harvey Gantt in his Senate campaign. Jesse Helms, the incumbent, has a poor track record on racial equality.
Helms didn’t hesitate to stoke racial tensions in his 1990 victory address, according to The Associated Press, saying, “Well, there is no joy in Mudville tonight.”
It’s impossible to say if Jordan’s support would have changed the race’s outcome. Helms received almost 100,000 votes. It would have been a huge uphill battle, even considering Jordan’s prominence at the time.
Jordan, who is now the governor of the Charlotte Hornets, isn’t taking any chances in this debate.
Jordan will donate $1 million to the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting.
The Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting was founded in 2016 at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with the goal of increasing and improving racial disparity reporting. The organization will get $1 million, according to a press statement from UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Rhema Bland, the director, expressed gratitude to Jordan for his help:
“It’s an incredible honor to be one of just three recent winners chosen in this round. We’re also privileged to track the economic justice, legal, and voter rights organizations that won Black Community Commitment funding in 2023 and 2023. I believe it reflects our efforts and the effect we want to have on the media profession and our democracy in general.”
Morehouse College in Atlanta and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. were among the recipients of funding.

Michael Jordan stated that he was at a different point in his life when he made his notorious comments regarding Republicans’ shoe-buying habits. He explained his remarks on The Last Dance but did not apologize.
Jordan told ESPN, “I don’t believe the remark has to be rectified since I said it in fun on a bus with Horace Grant and Scottie Pippen.” “When I was playing my sport, I wasn’t thinking about politics; I was concentrating on my trade. Was it self-centered? Probably. That, though, was my energy. That was the focus of my energy.”
When introducing the Black Community Commitment awards in 2023, he made a different pitch:
“Black Americans have had a long history of discrimination that prevents us from fully participating in American society. We recognize that voting is one of the most effective methods to overcome systematic prejudice. We recognize that bringing about the change we want will take time, but we are moving fast to ensure that the Black community’s voice is heard.”
As a player and businessman, Michael Jordan acquired a huge wealth. It’s wonderful that he wants to utilize his influence to assist others progress beyond simple existence to full participation in society.
