Thousands protest against vaccine passport plans in France and Italy

In France, thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest against a proposed law that would require citizens to carry a vaccination card in order for their children to attend school. The protests are largely due to the fact that vaccinations are not mandatory and parents will be required to pay a fee for each vaccine administered. In Italy, the government is considering making vaccinations compulsory for all children attending public schools.

The Italy vaccine passport protest is a protest that has been happening in France and Italy. Thousands of people have been protesting against the government’s plans to create a vaccine passport.

On Saturday, tens of thousands of people protested in France and Italy against proposals for a vaccination passport.

On the streets of Paris, there were confrontations over plans to demand the ‘cards’ for daily activities such as eating indoors in restaurants or attending sports events and museums.

Demonstrators shouted “liberty” in both nations, as part of a European-wide push to persuade more people to receive Covid vaccines.

The cards, which are comparable to the vaccination passports being considered in the UK but called the “green pass” in Italy and the “health pass” in France, are seen as essential by leaders in both countries to convince individuals who are reluctant.

The anti-vaccination rhetoric from certain political figures has been blasted by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who described it as a “call to die.”

Due to the impending need for the cards, vaccination requests have increased in both nations.

However, some who believe it is a violation of their civil rights or who are concerned about vaccination safety are opposed.

‘We are establishing a huge disparity amongst people,’ said one demonstrator in Verona, who only identified himself as Simone due to worries about his work.

‘We shall have first-class people who can use public services, go to the theater, and participate in social activities, and second-class citizens who cannot.’

There were several scuffles with riot police, as well as flares and flames, but the demonstrations were otherwise peaceful.

In France and Italy, vaccination resistance and Covid regulations have brought together an unusual coalition of organizations, ranging from far-right parties to anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists, to families with young children and economic justice activists.

Many argue that vaccination pass requirements are a source of inequality that would further divide society, drawing parallels with previous totalitarian regimes.

In recent months, countries throughout Europe have pushed out vaccinations to a large percentage of their people, with or without incentives.

Although no country on the continent has made vaccinations obligatory, there are plans to make vaccine passports mandatory.

Denmark was the first to implement the system, and Belgium will need a vaccination certificate for outdoor events with more than 1,500 attendees by mid-August and indoor events by September.

Germany and the United Kingdom have so far resisted a blanket approach, while vaccines are so widely used in Spain that no incentives are required.

The French health card is needed for museums, theaters, and tourist attractions, and will take effect on August 9 for restaurants and railways.

People must be completely vaccinated, have a recent negative test, or evidence of recovery from Covid-19 to get it.

Only one vaccination dosage, a negative test result within the previous 48 hours, or evidence of recovery from the virus within the last six months are required in Italy.

From August 6, its certificate will apply to outdoor restaurants, theaters, stadiums, museums, and other meeting areas.

According to Italy’s special commissioner for vaccines, vaccine demand rose by as much as 200 percent in certain areas after the government introduced the green card.

In the two weeks after President Macron stated that the viral passes would be extended to restaurants and many other public places, almost five million people in France received a first dosage and more than six million received a second treatment.

Vaccination demand had been dwindling for weeks before that.

Businesses in Italy and France seem to be warily supporting the passes; nevertheless, the move in Denmark indicates that compliance will expand over time.

‘The first couple of months weren’t nice,’ Sune Helmgaard, who runs a restaurant in Copenhagen, said.

Vaccination rates were still low in the spring, and consumers couldn’t always get checked in time.

Mr Helmgaard’s company is back to pre-pandemic levels now that more than 80% of eligible Danes have gotten at least one shot and more than 60% are completely vaccinated.

‘People feel safer,’ he said. As a result, Danes are delighted to display their pass.’
